Final Project: Stop Motion
3 Favourite Stop Motion Video
-
While I was searching stop motion animation video, I stumbled upon a lot amazing film, these are 3 of the animation that inspired my final project.
-
1. The Coin
The Coin from Youtube
硬币(The Coin) | Stop-Motion Animated Short Film by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Siqi Song.
I like the framing, the material, expressive facial expression. How it convey the story, the storyline and sound effect and all of it.
2. Negative Space
Negative Space from Youtube
This also inspire me to film in a concept of loss and death.
I like how it conveys the emotion in the animation.
3. The Kite
The Kite from Youtube
From searching about visual reference, i found this stop motion about the story of loss, which also makes me wanna do a similar story with it, I like how it was film with lots of interesting perspective and using interesting materials.
Trial Shoot
-
Figure 1.2 Stop Motion Exercise
With our group from Project 2 Production Shoot, we shoot a simple stop motion of a duck swimming in the studio with the stop motion app and edited afterwards in Premiere Pro.
Figure 1.3 Stop Motion Trial Shoot
I did a trial shoot of my stop motion after finishing my puppet making and set setup. The background object is seem moving because the tripod of the camera is not set really secured, which is fixed when shooting the final stop motion video by borrowing the studio's tripod.

| Figure 3.6 Set setup I setup the set using small materials of found objects like box, cardboard that I have and used wool felt and felt fabric cloth, cotton as other material in my set. |
Shooting / Editing
After all the props are done making, I place them on the set and started to shoot the pictures for the animation.
I then compiled footage of pic, import them into Adobe Premiere Pro, Arranging and choosing pictures to include or exclude in the animation and arranging the timeline
I tried Mr.Martin's suggestion to use Roto Brush in After Effects to remove the wire in the background of the picture but I think photoshop is more easier to edit it out so I changed to edit in PS for all the other pictures that needed to be edit.

Feedback
-
Idea is good, storyboard has to be refined
Week 10
-
-
Finish the Storyboard
Week 13
-
-
The camera is moving, use stable tripod.
Do not use string to locate the prop in shooting because it will move, stick
or aluminium wire is ok
Film with natural lighting.
Week 14
-
The wire can be edited with Roto Brush in after effects
I am glad that I got to shoot a short film that is based on the story and concept in mind and this is my very first stop motion animation making. Shooting a stop motion is harder than I think. Since I choose to use wool felt as the primary subject in my animation, it requires lots of time to make all the props and puppet.

Reflection
I am glad that I got to shoot a short film that is based on the story and concept in mind and this is my very first stop motion animation making. Shooting a stop motion is harder than I think. Since I choose to use wool felt as the primary subject in my animation, it requires lots of time to make all the props and puppet.
While shooting, there is another challenge which is i need to keep the
background same as in all the frame, which I think I failed to do it,
causing my editing afterwards some trouble, trying to fix the background in
photoshop. I tried using roto brush to edit out the wire in the footage but
I think using photoshop is better so I switched to use photoshop to edit out
all the pic with wire or uneven background.
Another challenge when editing other than editing pics in photoshop is the
arranging of the time to let the animation progress smoothly, which takes up
lots of time in editing. I have made another mistake which is not constantly
saving my project, causing when all sound effects and subtitles are added, Adobe Premiere Pro crashes, so I had to reupload and rearrange the sound effect, bgm and
subtitles.
Eventually it is done, but it does takes up lots of time than what I
initially thought. It is still not a perfect stop motion animation but I
enjoyed making this short animation.
