LECTURES

WEEK 1

TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS

Axial System: All elements organised to the left or right of a single axis
Radial System: Elements extended from point of focus
Dilatational System: Elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion
Random System: Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship
Grid System: A system of vertical and horizontal division
Modular System: A series of non-objective elements constructed in standardised units
Transitional System: An informal system of layered banding
Bilateral System: Texts is arranged symmetrically on a single axis

WEEK 2
-
TYPOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION

Principles of Design Composition: Emphasis, Isolation, Repetition, Symmetry & Asymmetry, Alignment, Perspective, Rhythm, Contrast

Rule of thirds: Photographic guide to composition divided into 3 columns and 3 rows.
The intersecting lines are used as a guide to place the points of interest, within the given space.

Environmental Grid: Based on the exploration of existing or a few structures combined.

Form and Movement: Based on the exploration of the existing Grid System.

WEEK 3
-
CONTEXT & CREATIVITY

Handwriting: Handwriting is important in the study of type because the first mechanically produced letterforms were designed to directly mimic handwriting.
Hand writing would become the basis or standard that for form, spacing and conversions mechanical type would try to mimic.

Local Movements & Individuals:

Programming language needed to encode the different types of vernacular writting systems were cracked by Muthu Nedumaran (Programmer & Typographer in Malaysia)

Huruf is a local graphic designers digitalizing and revitalizing typefaces in Malaysia.

Ek Type and Indian Type Foundry - organizations that have done ground-breaking work with the development of vernacular typefaces in India.

WEEK 4
-
DESIGNING TYPE

Type design carries a social responsibility so one must continue to improve its legibility.

Type design is a form of artistic expression

General Process of Type Design:
1. Research - Understand type history, type anatomy, and type conventions
- Know the type purpose
- examine existing fonts

2. Sketching - Traditionally or Digitally
3. Digitalization - Fontlab/Glyphs or Adobe Illustrator
4. Testing - process of refining
5. Deploy - teething issue might still remain and needed to be improve

Typeface Construction: Using grid consists of square, and inside a circle that just touches the lines of the square in four places.

Constructions & Consideration

Week 5
-
Perception & Organisation

Perception = what you see
Perception in typography: contrast, form, organisation of content influencing the visual navigation and interpretation of reader.

Figure 1.1 Contrast in Typography

Contrast in Typography - size, weight, form, structure, texture, direction, colour.

Figure 1.2 Screenshot from lecture slides - Carl Dair's seven typography contrast

Form
- to represent a concept
- to do so in a visual form

Organisation / Gestalt theory

Gestalt theory emphasise that the whole of anything is greater than its parts.

Gestalt theory
- Law of Similarity
- Law of Proximity
- Law of Closure
- Law of Continuation
- Law of Symmetry
- Law of Simplicity (Praganz)

TASK 1 - EXERCISES: TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS & TYPE & PLAY

TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS
-

Axial System

First attempt in trying to compose the layout in Adobe InDesign after weeks.
We did about the axial system in our first practical class after watching the lecture and necessary tutorial videos.

Figure 2.1 & 2.2 First attempts in Axial System (Week 1, 5/4/2023)

First attempt of trying, I tried on the straight line and slanted line as the axial line to bound off.

Exploration

Refinement after feedback
-
After receiving feedback, I refine some of the layout and also redesign some of the system that I don't really satisfied with the last design I did.

Axial System

I choose the 2nd layout that I have and refine the graphical element and made some minimal changes.

Radial System
-
I was not satisfied with the last 2 tryouts of the radial system layout, so for the refinement layout, I try to add several more focus point in different direction. Adding minimal graphics elements to enhance it.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 1 / Typographic System
- General Feedback

Consider if it's comprehensive with the axial system, then look into the communication
(legibility, hierarchy, use of space, etc.) and how to present the layout aesthetically pleasing and
memorable but engaging and dynamic at the same time.

Do not get overly influence with the reference.

-
Specific Feedback / Axial System

The composition is angled and the design works but visual standpoint, which the weakness of the design is the expression does not captured essence.

Detail: the timing and the name together seems like the timing looks stands out than the name.
Solution: change the timing to small caps / downsize the timing by 0.5pt.

WEEK 2 / Typographic System
-
General Feedback
Information placed on the edge of the layout is firm and create tension and attract the eyes.
- Over expression in designing the layout will cause ineffectiveness of communication. Graphical element should be an enhancement to the information.
- Forms follow function, every element should have a purpose in the layout
- Texture, weight of text made the layout more rich
- Understand the context of your layout and understand the eye flow, design the layout to how you want others to look from and to attract the attention of the eyes.
- Text should be interacting to each other ( not like two island text)
- Look into the details after always zooming in and out.
- 1024px, jpeg, pdf x2 - grid = editorial layout

-
Specific Feedback
Axial system: should align with the axis, colour of arrow overlapped
Radial system: ultilise the space, heading is split into 2, leading and spacing unbalanced
Dilatational system: flow is disconnect, unconvensional, text hard to read
Random system: can be more random, explore more, break up the alignment
Transitional system: not very transitional, flow of text not connected, title could be misleading.
Grid system: spacing unbalance, text in middle could be larger
Modular system: pt size could be bigger, ultilise the space to make it balance, spacing between text unbalance title could be bold to add weight and texture explore or try a different font to the title. Could add visual element to enhance the design.
Bilateral system: pt size could be bigger, gap is unconsistent

WEEK 3 / Type & Play
-
General Feedback

- Study the original image first, understand the core charactheristic and form.
- Extraction have to have the accurate structure from the original image, stay true to the core charactheristic. (true to form)
- While refining, it is not bound with the shape of extraction but the structure and core charactheristic of it, you could the shape as long as you understand the form and retained the core characteristic

-
Specific Feedback
-The change in the refinement is too drastic and has lost the aspect of charactheristic
-Study the image again and think what is the charactheristic that needed to be retain

WEEK 4 / Type & Play
-
General Feedback
Find related image and interplay the text with the background

-
Specific Feedback

The text is not well refined. Focus on the end point to make them consistent

REFLECTION

Experience
-
I learned a lot about layout design doing the first exercise, it was fun to explore with different typographic systems. But I actually took quite a long time to refine the layout to the design look that I am satisfied with. For exercise 2, initially I choose a more organic shape subject so I was wrong on the first step with minimal research and observation when extracting the fonts, but after that I choose a different subject. I had quite a hard time in completing the refinement of the font to its final look.
Overall, I think these exercise get me to practise a lot and get familiar with layout design and font design in typography.

Observations
-
When doing the first exercise, I observe about adding minimal graphical element, it could help enhance the composition of the layout but sometimes it could be a distraction too. The placement of the element is also important as it will lead the viewers eyes from one side to another side of the layout.

Findings
-
I found that when refining a font, consistent is key.
When designing a layout design with typographic system, adhering with the rules is the first step, then only looking into the aesthetic aspect of the layout and also the details and nuances of the font and alignment with the grids and guides.
