GROUP PROJECT
-
KINETIC TYPOGRAPHY

In a group of 7, we need to work together to produce a kinetic typography video of a choosen song.

We were slow to decide in which song we wanted to choose but we eventually chooses Hayd- Changes as our song to animate.

Lyric breakdown

We colour code the lyrics to divide the parts and each of us choose the part that we want to animate. I am in charge with the chorus part colour code in light yellow.

-
Font used

We have several font suggestion and chooses two font to use in our animation, after everyone votes for their preferred fonts, the final font we choose to use are Sadhise and Marydale.

After we have decided which font to use, everyone started on their part with the animation.

Animation

Initially, we agreed on using a blue colour background but didn't decide on which background image to use, so the draft version for everyone's animation has different background.

We have also tried to use the team project in After Effects to compile all our draft and work together to edit in one file but it can't work as not everyone can opened the file and a lot of errors occurred when we try to edit the file.

We changed to using crumble paper background after discussion for the art direction.

I've also refine the intro animation with the name of the song and applying range selector to change the colour of the letters of the text while also refining from the draft animation done.

Animation Refine

Because our animation was so simple with no visuals at all at the moment, we decided to add more visuals to refine the parts of the animation. Below is the spreadsheet where choose the part we think need to be refine and labeled our name initials as the part to refine. I needed to further refine my chorus part and add in visuals and animation to line 14 - trying to fight the seasons. Edwin and Michelle refined the other parts labelled too.

Refined animation video file uploaded by Michelle and I could be found here:

We have also sent our AE file for Edwin to do the final compilation of the animation. In the final version, Edwin has also made some changes that is not labelled in the spreadsheet above while compiling our files together.

Individual Task

-
Lyric Video (Kinetic Typography Practise)

In week 2 class, we were given a basic tutorial on how to use Adobe After Effects on following the demo that Mr.Martin shows us in the practical session of week 2. Here's the outcome of my version after watching the demo video.

Animated Chart

Each of us are assigned which a different set of data and we need to animate the bar chart or graph assigned after the practical session.

-
Vector Animation

Week 4 Practical session, we learned about vector/character animation. We were asked seperate the layers from the AI file downloaded and follow the youtube tutorial for the first part of the animation. Mr. Martin then showed us how to use the wiggle tool and puppet position pin tool afterwards.

We were then each assigned to a different file and our task is to animate it using the wiggle or puppet position pin tool and apply other technique we learned from the practical session such as bounce effect using position, scale or rotation with keyframes.

FEEDBACK

Week 4

Kinetic Typography

Animation is too simple.

REFLECTION

We was always slow and lacking behind during the progress of kinetic typography. I wish we had done the bar chart animation and vector animation before doing the kinetic typography group task because doing the vector animation can help me understand a bit more about After Effects comparing to just starting to animate the lyrics video.

The slow progress is mainly due no initiative shown and slow response in our group. Another reason for that are we are still not familiar in using After Effects especially using it for the team project. We should actually have a plan of animation like a storyboard that we discussed together before moving on to doing our parts individually, because we don't have a storyboard, I think it makes the work more harder to do. If we have a storyboard ready before doing the animation we could actually save up lots of time trying to refine our work.

Another thing that I learnt is to do enough research and use resources like youtube tutorial to learn about the basic or even more advance technique in working in the program before trying to start from nowhere to animate the kinetic typography.

I'm thankful that we are able to finish the project and for the members who put extra work and effort to make the final refinement for our kinetic typography animation.
