Project 2: Sense of place

Through this project, students need to utilise and apply the design principles that they have learnt to express a location of their choice. The place becomes the subject of the composition in which the design principles are applied to capture the social and environmental aspects, and even the time effects that will best express the intention and interpretation for the particular location.

In your PROJECT 2 – SENSE OF PLACE post in the blog, include:

1. a recap of Project 2 brief
2. your design process:
2.1 visual references (designs that have inspired your own)
2.2 idea exploration and description
2.3 final outcome in JPEG and a short rationale
2.4 feedback given by the lecturer
2.5 reflection on the particular week

After looking for inspirations and thinking of my idea for the place, I have decide to choose the choice of place to be a place in my mind and a place that i would want to be. A place that brings out sense of calmness, carefree/ freedom with a dreamy vibe to it.

sketches

Figure 5.1 Flower - sense of calmness
A sketch for the drawing of a tiny little girl resting on the flower

Figure 5.2 Whale - sense of freedom / free

Figure 5.3 Another sketch including both elements of flower and whale

I ended up continue to work on this sketch for the final outcome of this project.

For this sketch, the elements included are - whale, flower, butterfly ( representing me ), moon, stars, fireworks, night sky

The whale is like a planet and there is a flower on the planet and I live on the leaf of the flower, looking at the moon everyday, sometimes there will be shooting stars or fireworks that fill or add colours to my life.
Sense of calmness - night sky, whale
sense of belonging - butterfly on the leaf
sense of carefree or  feeling of alive- fireworks

Figure 5.4 Improved draft with dawn sky

Figure 5.5 2nd draft with different composition

In this draft, I changed the whale to a heart shape lake, inspired by the photos taken by me (Figure 4.2)
and changed the flowers to be more detailed.

Final Outcome with Rationale

Figure 6.1 Final outcome - "haven - sense of place"

"Haven"

Design Principles included of Harmony, Gestalt theory, Contrast inside the artwork.
Sense of Place -  having sense of dreamy, carefree, freedom.

Background of the artwork is in the time of dawn, and to me dawn is the change between day and night, the transition of the sky from light to dark. It can be really colourful but disappear quickly when darken to night time. The girl wearing a red dress can represent me in the place or just a fairy flying above the sky and flowers, carrying a bag of stardust, trying to decorate and brighten up the sky by putting up stars beside the moon.

The name of the flowers in the artwork are Anemone and Dandelions, which are two of my favourite flowers.
I named this artwork "haven" its because I want my sense of place to be a safe place that gives calmness to me.

I would like to be in a place like the whale with the sea and the flowers in dawn sky, having a sense of dreamy vibe, sense of carefree and freedom. To feel like I am living in a fairy tale, in the world of a planet of whale and flowers exists with beautiful sky and my work is to brighten up the sky using the stardust that I've collected from the flower.

Feedback
-
Week 9
Work more on the composition, size of moon can be smaller and make sure not too much things going on in one page.

-
Week 10

Can have the whale tail coming out more and the open composition of the 2nd draft with the lake does not sit well, can try adding additional flower or landscape form to experiment with more layout form and how it will best represent the idea of my sense of place.

Reflection
-
I enjoyed working on the artwork for this project of sense of place. I think it is fun thinking of a place where I would want to be and what sense will I feel in that place. I think I am able to express the sense of place that I want to in my artwork and the feedback given by my lecturer is very helpful to guide me with the composition and elements in my artwork. I realise that composition of an artwork is important, to make the work more harmony and we can't put everything in one place, we can to think about does that element fit inside the composition and does it fit the theme or what I want to express. How you compose the artwork also will affect the interpretation of the artwork.
