Study all the visuals that you had collected.
Select visuals that you find relevant and interesting to you, which you can translate into a design work to create a portrait of yourself.
Remember to apply design principles in your work. For materials, you may use any of your choice, but do consider their suitability to best express your idea.

In your PROJECT 1 – SELF-PORTRAIT post in the blog, include:

1. a recap of Project 1 brief
2. your design process:
2.1 visual references (designs that have inspired your own)
2.2 idea exploration and description
2.3 final outcome in JPEG and a short rationale
2.4 feedback given by the lecturer

Project 1 brief recap

- To draw a self-portrait while including design principles inside the artwork design.

Design process

Mindmap:

Figure 1.1 Physical collage of mind map about me

Figure 1.2 Digital mind map about me

Aspect / elements that i would like to feature in my self-portrait: nature element (sky, flower, etc.)
I also plan to draw from me being a night owl as the initial idea and main concept for my self portrait

Visual references

Art style or direction for my self-portrait sketches that inspire me

Figure 2.1 Self portrait illustration by @ran_art_ on Instagram (link to original post)

Portrait featuring Van Gogh starry night style in the background of the artwork. I like how the hair is drawn extending as a circle and blends with the background.

Figure 2.2 Illustration by @ototoi3046 on Instagram (link to original post)

I like the style and colour used in this drawing. I also like how it includes the sea, tulip flower and rain inside the drawing.

I like the style of the drawing with black colour outline and background of plants with the emphasis on the flower covering the eye

Figure 2.4 Portrait using collage of magazine (link to original post)

I think the artwork created is interesting and collage can be a different approach to do my self portrait in this project

Figure 2.5 double exposure picture (link to original post)

This artwork inspire me to think that I can use double exposure technique to place the image of me and the image of other elements that i want to include together

Idea exploration and description

Self portrait draft - sketching out the composition for my self portrait

Figure 4.1 Sketch #1

Tried to draw a little me trap in a small world inside of a bubble surrounded by flowers and butterfly

Figure 4.2 Sketch #2

Tried to draw a sun and moon with the paper plane in between,
It indicates that time flies fast between day and night
Plan to draw the moon and sun with contrast

Figure 4.3  WIP sketch

The sketch on the above is another sketch from my first sketch which has the idea of drawing me inside of a bubble or magic ball. Plan to add more elements outside the frame and add facial expression to the face inside of the magic bubble or add gesture to create movement.

The second sketch is a giant looking at the mountain

Improvised draft (Week 7)

I did not continue to finish my initial rough sketch but proceed to try out drawing out digitally and some of my idea changes and some of my direction of drawing changed so it's different from what I initially tried to draw on my sketch

Figure 5.1 Digital draft #1

A whale tail floating out of the surface of the sea, with the colorful bubble of circle and flower in the background, having butterflies surrounding the circle. Was thinking to place a small silhouette of me inside but still not sure how and where to.

 Figure 5.2 Digital sketch #2

Me floating above the sky on a whale with the moon and shooting stars

Figure 5.3 Digital sketch #3

Me being a night owl with heavy dark circles

Figure 5.4 Digital sketch #4

Wanted to express from the idea of being a night owl and trapped inside the vicious cycle of always staying awake midnight

Figure 5.5 Digital sketch #5

Me floating above the sky in between day and night, expressing the idea of me being a night owl or having a not so normal sleep schedule - staying awake in the midnight and being more tired on the day

Final Outcome with rationale (Submission)

Figure 6.1 Final Outcome of Self Portrait

The final outcome of my self portrait is from my last digital sketch #5, featuring myself floating in the sky between day and night, the moon represent the night and the clouds representing the day.
The design principle that i used in this artwork is Movement.

Being a night owl, I often stay awake in the midnight and the moon is always there, it listens to my worries and accompany me during my sleepless nights. I love to look at the sky, looking at the twinkling stars and pretty clouds in the sky always make me feel good.

The stars or stardust under my legs brings me to the sky, letting me to float above the sky. The butterflies brings my worries from my heart and flies to the moon. The flowing hair having a colourful pastel colour indicates that I can sleep peacefully and have a sweet dream with less worries in my sleep.

I added some of my physical feature that I think could represent me in this self portrait which is my 6 piercings and me wearing a pair of whale tail earring, my flower necklace and my pair of olive green shoe.

Feedback

Try to come out with thumbnail sketches first.
Think about what you want to include in your self portrait that you think can represent yourself.

Reflection

I try out different sketches and include design principle that we learn from the past exercise into this project.
I think what will be the best to represent me and what do i want to tell in my drawing that is expressed in my final outcome of my drawing.
